My Walk Down By the River

We had just gotten back from a trip to Vincennes for a visit with our New Pal kids (we met at Gregg Park and had a picnic lunch).  The sun was shining but it was a cold and blustery day!  So when we got home I thought I’d like to see how it was down on The River  (the Ohio River) here.  Well, it was just as blustery but I don’t think quite as chill (though walking the hills here to get to the river might have diminished that feeling).

As it happens the river was relatively calm and the sun was at just the right angle to make is look less muddy.  Was able to chat with a former retired pastor across the street from his place of residence.  He was working in his garage.  There were a few people out mostly dog walkers.  Not as many joggers as I thought there would be.

The Iris along The River were just gorgeous!  And some the the wee plant were hiding from the wind. 

And on the way home I walked by and most inviting house and garden.  It said to me, “I am enjoying Spring, you should enjoy it, too!

Spring In My Backyard

 

When Spring arrives one hopes that the flowers will just burst forth NOW!  Well, of course, that’s not what happens.  The temperatures fluctuate, the rains come, and there is still the possibility of a hard frost.  Then enters the Month of May and all that changes.

The most exciting for me is the first peony blossom.  When she arrives she shares her glorious fragrance.

What Mr. Red Maple leafs out he boasts his magnificent color!  It makes him look so strong.

The Rose, it appears so fragile, yet is so strong.  The color is vivid and the aroma is so sensual.

This beautiful friend is not only my friend but a friend to the bee.  Honey bees have been visiting  here for days!  I am so grateful for all the beauty I am able to experience in this beautiful Spring.

Memories

Before we were all confined to our homes, we made a trip to Baton Rouge, LA in early March.  Baton Rouge is a beautiful city and family are the best tour guides.

Before lunch one day, we all went to the Burden Museum and Gardens.  It was a lovely day and it’s a wonderful place for kids, even the young ones. 

I’m sure that there is a larger variety of blooming flowers in the late spring and I’m sorry we weren’t able to see them the I’m told it was much cooler and less humid that day!

And so a little history about Burden Museum and Gardens.

History. Burden Museum and Gardens offers 440 acres of green space located in the heart of Baton Rouge. It consists of the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens, Windrush Gardens and the Rural Life Museum. The property was owned by the Burden family from the mid 1800s and donated to the LSU System in 1966.

If you have a chance to visit Baton Rouge, I would recommend this as part of your visit!

Fountains

Fountains are lovely works of art in their own right. They are not only beautiful, but often places for quiet reflection. Went to Baton Rouge recently I was able to see some of these very old works of art.

 

Some fountains, however, have been converted to flower containers as in the one above at the botanical garden.

Trying To Help

I’ve spent a number of days knitting face mask ear guards to take to the hospital for the staff to wear.  They help relieve the irritation caused by the constant wearing of face masks.

I had been wondering what I could do to help during this health crisis. I knew I was too old to offer my services at the hospitals. But on Easter Sunday while visiting with friends on the phone in Pittsburgh I was given the opportunity I was seeking. I could knit the ear guard. And so that is what I set out to do. To date I have knitted 75 and delivered 50 to St. Vincent’s Hospital. The volunteer director tells me they are greatly appreciated.
